I’ve been saying for years that the targeted tool approach for thoughts, feelings and behaviors is flawed and can even be counterproductive in coaching. “This lens encourages us to view challenges as arising from independently functioning parts each requiring targeted tools." Couldn’t have said it better!
Clients can get stuck policing and debating their thoughts, or pathologizing feelings, or getting stuck in a willpower-shame loop because they can’t change their behavior. Thoughts and feelings are doorways, not destinations, as Ramon says.
The Neuroconstructionist approach and the science also aligns well with a lot of the Acceptance & Commitment and Internal Family Systems models.
Looking forward to volume 2 and more on somatic coaching.
Too much unnecessary science. Way too complex. The examples and overall approach is good though.
UPDATE: I think I rushed through the first few chapters and now starting to see it come together. There is a lot of nuance and a lot to take in. It's actually a really good handbook/manual and not your typical coaching book of tips.
As an experienced coach and trainer I am getting a lot out of it. It is very detailed and could have been split into two books. One book for the theory and science, and one for the practice. However, it is handy to have it all in one place to return to. Thanks.
The brain is amazing! Come in with an open mind and leave with a new approach to deeper change. Overall, a very thorough science handbook-style book and great resource to have on the shelf.
This is going to ruffle some feathers.
By calling out neuro-nonsense, directly dismantling popular concepts like the "amygdala hijack" and "traditional (faculty-psychology) coaching," and proclaiming that a different intervention logic is needed, Ramon David shifts the narrative toward psychological construction theory, predictive processing, and an approach to coaching that would be considered "whole-person," working at the level of meaning-making.
The book grounds the science (with hundreds of endnotes and references), critiques and clears the old model, unpacks the method, and shows it in action across numerous cases and breakdowns. Not everyone will love it. The ones doing the deeper work will.
Neuroconstructionist Coaching volume 1 is a well-researched, scientific handbook and coaching guidebook. It criticizes the theories and models that have informed many types of coaching, and highlights issues that many of us older coaches see working in the executive coaching space. It's great to see constructivist coaching being supported by modern neuroscience. A really good book for those with coaching experience or those wanting a very comprehensive scientific foundation for coaching.
I love it! There's a LOT to it, but it's very clear and has case studies and examples showing how it all works.
The author, Ramon David, highlights many of the issues when coaching is built on a faculty psychology and essentialist approach to change. Furthermore, how many neuroscience myths, such as the amygdala hijack have reinforced this. The solution? A fascinating paradigm shift, starting with what we know about how the brain works. He draws from psychological construction theory, predictive processing, grounded cognition and other well-known fields of study, and has developed a very practical, albeit very comprehensive, model of change. The models and practices are both helpful and very well thought out, as are the numerous case studies and breakdowns. This is a very well written book that is bound to impact the field for years to come.
Amazing so far. An entirely new framework for understanding human experience, and extremely well-researched and practical.
While the book contains a lot of complex neuroscience, it is easy enough to understand because there are a lot of examples, and Ramon explains it clearly. Where it really shines is the method itself. At first it seems complex too. However, the more I read the clearer it's becoming. It's a very clever way of approaching coaching and deeper levels of change. Well done!
I don't think there is anything I can say about what Ramon has put together that would do it justice. You need to read it to understand how powerful it is. There is nothing else like it out there.
This book, and the method, will change the way you think about the brain, the coaching industry, and how to work with clients. An invaluable resource and well-researched handbook.
Eye-opening! Solid neuroscience, not the mainstream marketing hype. It's more like a user manual for both the human brain and advanced coaching. The depth of both the neuroscience and the coaching is not only refreshing but has also provided me with a different way of approaching client work, and I don't think I've even scratched the surface yet.
The author has taken complex neuroscience and made it easier to understand. It's a very good practical handbook for any new or experienced coach. Highly recommended!!!
The complete guide to the human brain and how to work with it. It will change how you think about psychology, coaching, and even education and therapy. I haven't finished it yet, and it keeps getting better.
If you have any interest in neuroscience or being a top coach, you want to get yourself a copy of this book. It describes the science of change in incredible detail, the limits of many coaching models, and exactly how to help clients change no matter what their patterns are.
This book is very in-depth and I found it well worth the time to read thoroughly before starting to put into practice. I'd really like to do the certification program.
Do yourself a favor and don't hesitate. This isn't just a book with information and tips. It's an education and a practical course in how to coach in a very precise way. I've completed courses that cost thousands that are nowhere near as dense or practical as this.
A wealth of information, and as someone else said, it's in a league of its own. Ramon, you need to bring back the podcast!
I learned more about the brain in two chapters than in dozens of books and many courses I've taken, and a psychology degree. I've already started applying some of it with a lot of success. Thanks.
Ramon has a way of being able to translate very complex neuroscience into digestible chunks that form a solid evidence-based foundation for a detailed coaching methodology. Neuroconstructionist coaching is nothing like what you've seen before, and it also helps make a lot of sense of existing approaches and their limitations.
The best book about the brain you'll ever read. Possibly the best method that exists for personal change and transformation. The book itself is stunning. Worth way more than the price.
As a coach and clinician for over two decades, I've rarely found something truly unique. Neuroconstructionist coaching is in a league of its own. It has given me a depth of understanding I never knew, and shown me where the field has been going wrong. It needs to be in the hands of everyone who works with clients. It is a game-changer.
I've been waiting for this to come out for over a year, and it did not disappoint. Truly revolutionary. I'll be reading it many times over, as it is very comprehensive and has such an innovative approach. Can't wait for the next volume!
It's an awesome book, and clearly a huge amount of work.
Bravo, Ramon! So practical and helpful for me, both as a beginner coach and as a psychologist. Thanks a lot!!!
